If a child does not know where they will be sleeping tonight, or if they are cold or hungry, they will not be able to focus on schoolwork. Every child needs to have their basic needs met first, in order to succeed academically.
Kids are struggling today more than ever to deal with the pressures of life. Seventy percent of kids within the Toledo public school system come from single-parent homes. Single parents do what they can to provide for their children; however, the reality is that everything single parents need to accomplish in a day to support their children sometimes does not allow time for assisting their children with homework. Every child can benefit from tutoring, and developing a system to provide effective, efficient tutoring support is paramount to a child's future success.
Whether we are four or forty years old, we all can benefit from having someone to talk to who has been where we are and can help us get to where we want to go. No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care about them. That is especially true with kids. We need to invest in the lives of kids within our community if we truly want to be able to influence their path and help them to become successful, contributing members of our society.
For years many of us have been told and have told others, if you want to succeed professionally, you have to go to college. In doing so, we have done today's youth a big disservice. Although some careers require a secondary degree and others a master's or doctorate, many high paying jobs do not require any college degree. Our goal is to expose kids at a young age to numerous career opportunities through job shadowing and internships to help them identify career opportunities that fit their interests. Once they know what they want to do, they can then determine the minimum education required to qualify for their desired job. I know a high number of young men and women who are in their mid to late 20's, who have $10,000 to $50,000 worth of student loans, who do not have a degree and still are not sure of what they want to do to make a living. We need to do everything we can to prevent this from continuing to happen.
